Background and Training Requirements

Our Global Institute summer 2020 training is open to participants from all over the world! 

Applicants must hold a minimum of a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited university. Master’s and/or Doctoral training in counseling, psychology or a related discipline is preferred.  Training will be delivered at a level appropriate to advanced graduate students in counseling or clinical psychology and early-career professionals currently working in counseling and mental health related fields.

All training will be conducted in English. After completing one and/or two weeks’ of training, participants will be awarded a certification of completion from UC Berkeley Global Institute on Counseling and Student Mental Health.


The summer 2020 institute consists of two weeks (Monday, July 6 to Friday, July 17) of full-time training (Monday through Friday each week from 9am-4pm). Students can enroll in one or two weeks of training. 

Week #1 - College Student Mental Health in the World: Overview, Trends, and Crisis Intervention  

Monday, July 6 – Friday, July 10

Learning Objectives
This week is designed to advance participants’ understanding of college student mental health challenges in the U.S., with the hope of exploring similarities and differences with participants from around the world. Participants will also increase their clinical knowledge and skills of suicide assessment and crisis intervention within a short-term treatment model.

  • Facing and Relating to Human Suffering

Week #2 - Advanced Clinical Specialty Training

Monday, July 13 – Friday, July 17

Learning Objectives
During this week, clinicians will expand their clinical knowledge through a sequential and progressive training of advanced counseling skills.  Training will focus on cutting-edge advances in evidence-based interventions and will incorporate self-examination and reflection needed to be effective in the professional practice of counseling.
